The Moral Premise Statement (MPS) is what your story is REALLY ABOUT. A singular story or movie, if it is to be successful, is about a single idea articulated in a MPS, which describes the true and natural relationship between character motivations, decisions, action and consequence.

The MPS is a misnomer of sorts. It is more accurate (but also more awkward) to call it The Moral-Physical Premise Statement (MPPS). You'll find both in my blogs and workshops. They refer to exactly the same thing.

This page is the idea of William Fitzpatrick who created and manages WikiScreenplay, a site "committed to supporting the enterprise of quality storytelling - particularly through the medium of film." Thank you William, a webpage where MPS's for the stories I've had the privilege to analyze can be a great benefit, and I am indebted to you for your suggestion. More importantly, however, is William's offer to create a place at WikiScreenplay where anyone can contribute MPS for the stories that they have analyzed. Here's the link to the Moral Premise page at WikiScreenplay

With any effort like this there are some assumptions and clarificaitons that need to be made. They are listed here and then the list below. Thank you all for your contribution to this list and William's, of which I will be a part as time allows.

Explanatory Notes:

  1. This list is helpful to story writers and analyists who are trying to understand what a particular work may be about, even though the work is not listed here, and regardless if that work is of their own creation or another's. The juxtapostion of virtues and vices and their consequences while removed from the context of a work may not be universally true, nonetheless the formulations listed below will point understanding in a helpful direction.
  2. MPS are listed alphabetically by the title of the work. An alpha menu is provided at the top of each letter's section.
  3. F=Film, N=Novel, P=Play, S=Short Story, TV = Television
  4. An analysis of the story (if I'm aware of an analysis that I have written or that I recommend by another) is linked next to the work's title. Many of these will be on the Moral Premise Blog.
  5. The webpage to make your contribution to a master list of MPS is at William FitzPatrick's WikiScreenplay. (A direct link to that WkikiScreenplay page will be provided when it's ready for contributions.) I will be an active participatant at that site.
  6. You are welcome to recommend works and their MPS to me for inclusion on this list, but they will only be included here if I am familiar with the work and agree with you.
  7. The MPS listed here are NOT the final say regarding the MP for that particular work. As you will note some films clearly have more than one MP at work, although in more successful works the multiple MPS act to reinfoce one or the other. It is easier for a novel to have more than one MPS simply because of its unhindred length.
  8. The outer conflict of a successful story is driven by the motivations derived from the primary (and viseral) conflict of values described in the moral premise statment. Thus:
General Form of a Moral Premise Statment
[a psychological vice] leads to [physical detriment]; but
[the opposing psychological virtue] leads to [physical betterment.]
